Giffgaff has been getting harder and harder to deal with lately. It is being pulled from all kinds of platforms, and even sellers who stocked up earlier are raising prices. Right now it is selling for around 80-100, which I still do not think is worth it.

On top of that, the previous Dutch Vodafone option now has a higher payment barrier, and German Vodafone is also difficult to apply for.

Many readers have asked me, “Is there an alternative to Giffgaff?”

That was until I found this gem: VOXI, under Vodafone UK.

If you need a low-cost, high-trust, no-real-name UK phone number, VOXI is definitely one of the best options available right now.

That said, I should make this clear upfront: activating and using this card is a bit more complicated than Giffgaff, so it is not ideal for total beginners. Be mentally prepared.

Who this is for:

1. Why VOXI?

Honestly, VOXI may be the UK SIM card that is currently best suited to replacing Giffgaff. Here are a few reasons:

1. Backed by a major carrier, with higher trust weight

VOXI is a sub-brand of Vodafone, not a virtual operator or MVNO, but a real mobile network operator. Compared with Giffgaff, which is an O2 MVNO, VOXI numbers tend to carry higher trust weight, giving you a steadier success rate when registering for ChatGPT, Telegram, WhatsApp, and various bank accounts.

2. Extremely low cost to keep the number active

This is the key point. With VOXI, keeping the number active can cost as little as £10 for 30 years. That works out to about 3 per year, and the rule is very simple: as long as the balance changes once every 180 days, the number stays alive.

3. No real-name verification

Yes, you read that right. VOXI currently does not require KYC or real-name verification. No passport, no ID card. You only need an email address and a UK address, which can be a virtual address, to apply.

4. Free SMS receiving while roaming in China

You can receive verification SMS messages directly in China for free. It roams on China Mobile or China Unicom signals, with no VPN and no roaming package required.

5. Supports eSIM, and can also work on Chinese-market phones

VOXI offers an eSIM version. With card-writing tools such as XeSIM and 9eSIM, it can also work perfectly on Chinese-market phones. I personally use a Chinese-market iPhone + XeSIM, and it runs perfectly.

6. Free first-month benefit

This is a hidden perk. If you stop when you reach the payment page during the application process and wait a few hours, VOXI will send you a promotional email with a discount code that waives the first month’s plan fee. In other words, you can get this card at zero cost.

Some bloggers also say you can get it for free by using an EDU email address.

2. First, here are my real-world test results for this card

• ✅ WhatsApp: received instantly and reliably
• ✅ Uber: registration works
• ✅ WeChat: can be linked, though I recommend using a backup number
• ✅ UK bank accounts: Monzo, Kraken, Lemfi, Yonder, Zilch, and others can all be registered

3. Is this card reliable? Will it get blocked?

I know what you are thinking: “If it sounds this good, there must be a catch, right?”

Here is my conclusion first: right now, it really is a free-rider window, but the policy could change at any time.

VOXI is essentially a brand Vodafone launched to attract younger users, and it is currently in a market-promotion phase, which is why the terms are so generous. But UK regulation of prepaid cards is getting stricter, and in the future it may require real-name verification or adjust its policies.

So my advice is: while you can still get in for free, get on board now.

As for reliability, Vodafone is one of the world’s top three telecom operators, so the risk of it disappearing is basically zero. Many bloggers are also recommending this card, and a large number of users are already using it.

4. Read this before signing up: what you need to prepare

Before you start, you need to prepare the following:

✅ Email address

• Used to receive the eSIM QR code and account information
• I recommend using Gmail or Outlook, not a domestic Chinese email provider

✅ UK address

• It must be a real UK street address
• You must verify it with Google Maps, and try not to use an address generator

✅ A phone that supports eSIM

• Overseas versions of iPhone, Pixel, Samsung, and similar phones can use it directly
• Chinese-market phone users need a card-writing tool such as XeSIM, 9eSIM, or ESTK. I strongly recommend getting one.
• How should you choose between them? For Android phones, choose 9eSIM if you want something cheaper, and choose xEsim if you want a pricier but better experience. For iPhones, choose xesim.

5. Physical SIM or eSIM?

VOXI has two options:

Physical SIM: requires a UK address to receive it, suitable for users who have a UK forwarding address. Some bloggers currently report that the cost of a physical SIM is relatively high, so it is not highly recommended.

eSIM, strongly recommended: apply online, activate in seconds, and no need to wait for delivery. With XeSIM, Chinese-market phones can also use it.

6. Hands-on setup: a step-by-step beginner-friendly guide

⏱️ Estimated total time: from application to activation and use, the whole process can take anywhere from about 10 minutes to 24 hours. Filling out the form only takes 5-10 minutes; the main wait is for the official review, and you can usually receive the eSIM within a few hours. Apply as early as possible, before the policy tightens.

Step 1: Apply for a free eSIM

Open VOXI’s official application page:

• Use incognito mode or clear your browser cache
• Make sure your IP address and the UK address you enter are in the same area to improve the approval rate

A. Choose a plan

After entering the page, you will see several plan options.

My recommendation: choose the cheapest plan, usually the £10/month one.

Why? Because we only need the number, not its data or calls. Later, I will show you how to cancel the plan and switch to Pay As You Go mode.

Click “Get this plan” or “Choose this plan.”

B. Choose eSIM

On the SIM type selection page, choose eSIM.

If you are using a Chinese-market phone, still choose eSIM. You can write it to XeSIM later.

C. Fill in your personal information

This step is important. Fill in every item carefully:

Name:

• Use pinyin. You can enter anything, because real-name verification is not required.
• For example: First Name: Jason, Last Name: Yu

Date of birth:

• Enter a date you can remember. This is very important, because you will need this date later to open the PDF file.
• Note: you must be at least 18 years old

Email address:

• Do not enter it incorrectly. The eSIM QR code will be sent to this email address.
• I recommend using Gmail or Outlook

UK address:

• This is the most important step.
• You must enter a real UK street address
• Do not use an obvious business address or post office address

How do you find a usable UK address?

Search manually with Google Maps, recommended

1. Open Google Maps and search for any UK city, such as London or Manchester
2. Find a street in a residential area
3. Click a house and check the full address
4. Make sure the address includes a street number, street name, city, and postcode

D. Payment information

Here you need to enter your payment card information.

Important note:

• If you want to get the first month for free, after filling in the information, do not click submit yet.
• Leave this page open for a few hours, or close the browser and come back the next day.
• VOXI will send a promotional email to your inbox containing a discount code that waives the first month’s plan fee.
• After receiving the discount code, return to the payment page, enter the code, and you can waive the first month’s £10 fee.

If you do not want to wait, you can also pay directly. In any case, you can cancel the plan later and switch to Pay As You Go mode.

After the payment succeeds, click “Yes, I am attending” on the page, then click “Place order” directly.

You will receive a confirmation email.

Step 2: Receive the eSIM QR code

After the submission succeeds, your inbox will receive an email from VOXI, usually within a few minutes to a few hours.

The subject line will be something like: “Here’s how to set up your eSIM”

The email includes:

• 📱 eSIM QR code for downloading the eSIM to your phone
• 📞 Mobile number, your UK number in the format +44 7xxx xxxxxx
• 🔢 Activation information

Save this email. You will need it later!

Next, open the attached PDF in the email. It requires a password:

Enter the date of birth you filled in earlier in DDMMYYYY format, 8 digits in total.

Step 3: Download the eSIM to your phone

If you have an overseas iPhone:

1. Go to Settings -> Cellular -> Add eSIM
2. Select “Use QR Code”
3. Scan the QR code in the email.
4. Follow the prompts to finish the installation.
5. Give this SIM a name, such as “VOXI UK”.
6. Choose what this SIM will be used for. I recommend turning off Cellular Data and keeping only Voice and SMS enabled.

If you have a mainland China iPhone, using XeSIM as the example here:

If you bought the newer Xesim X2Pro version,

If you have not bought one yet, buy the latest version. The process is much simpler.

If you bought Xesim earlier and use an iPhone, follow the tutorial below:

1. Insert the XeSIM card into the iPhone. This requires the Xesim X2 Pro version.
2. Xesim App > tap Scan in the top right > after it is recognized successfully > copy the activation code. [The activation code is actually provided directly in our email, so you can copy it directly without scanning.]
3. Then follow the path shown in the image: Settings > Cellular > tap the SIM card where you inserted Xesim > SIM Applications > tap Xesim > Download eSIM > enter the activation code you just copied > tap Send > Receive > wait on the page for more than 30 seconds, and it will show “Download successful”.
4. Then, in the eSIM list, you can see “Vodafone UK eSIM”. Tap it, then tap “Enable eSIM”.

[Note: If you previously switched to another card, enable Seedlink first. Otherwise, the download will fail.]

[Note: Do not do anything else during the download. Just wait quietly.]

[Note: If there is no confirmation code, tap Send directly without filling anything in.]

The Xesim App also provides detailed tutorial instructions. Just follow the steps to complete it.

If you bought Xesim earlier and use an Android phone, it is even easier:

1. Insert the XeSIM card into the phone.
2. Open the XeSIM App and tap the plus sign -> scan the code.
3. Scan the eSIM QR code in the email.
4. After the download finishes, tap Save, then enable it.

At this point, you have only completed the eSIM download. It is not activated yet, your phone still has no signal, and you have not received the number. Just keep following Mr. Yu’s tutorial!

Step 4: Wait for activation

After downloading the eSIM, do not rush.

You need to wait anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours before it can find a signal. In my case, it took about 20 minutes. If it takes longer, you can try re-enabling this SIM, which may speed things up.

After activation succeeds, you will receive a welcome SMS from VOXI telling you the number is ready to use.

At this point, your phone’s status bar should show a “VOXI” or “Vodafone UK” signal. In China, it will show as roaming on China Mobile or China Unicom.

Step 5: Configure the access point (APN)

To make sure you can send and receive SMS normally, you need to configure the APN.

For iPhone users:

1. Go to Settings -> Cellular -> select the VOXI SIM
2. Tap Cellular Data Network
3. Then fill in the details below:

3. Save and select this APN.

Step 6: Test SMS reception

After configuration is complete, quickly test whether you can receive SMS.

After you receive an SMS, the phone number should already be visible under Cellular on iPhone. At this point, you can test receiving SMS verification codes.

I tested these services:

• ✅ Uber: verification code received instantly
• ✅ WhatsApp: received instantly

Basically, any service that supports UK numbers should be able to receive verification codes normally.

Step 7: Activate the number and check the phone number

After activation succeeds, you need to log in to your VOXI account to check your mobile number.

How do you check the mobile number?

1. Visit the VOXI website: https://www.voxi.co.uk/
2. Click “Sign in” in the top right.
3. Enter the email and password you used when registering.
4. The system will send an SMS verification code to your VOXI number. You should be able to receive it by now.
5. Enter the verification code, and you will be logged in successfully.
6. Go to the dashboard and click “My Account”.
7. You will then see your mobile number in this format: +44 7xxx xxxxxx, or it may be shown as 07xxx xxxxxx.

Important note:

• Write this number down. You will need it later for top-ups and keeping the number active.
• UK mobile number formats: the international format is +44 7xxx xxxxxx, and the local format is 07xxx xxxxxx.

Step 8: Top up your balance

After activation, your account will have some balance from the first-month plan. For long-term number retention, though, I recommend adding some balance first.

Why top up?

• VOXI’s number-retention rule is: as long as your balance changes every 180 days, the validity period is extended by another 180 days
• A £5 top-up can last a long time and is much less hassle than having to operate it every time.

How do you top up?

Method 1: Top up on the official website (recommended)

1. Visit the Vodafone top-up page: https://vestapay.vodafone.co.uk/VodafoneUKMobileWebUI/UI?ACTION=AT
2. Enter your mobile number, in the format +447xxxxxxxx or 07xxxxxxxx.
3. Choose the top-up amount. The minimum is £5.
4. Pay with Visa/Mastercard or a payment tool such as Wise. [I used ZA Bank Visa.]
5. It usually arrives within 10-30 minutes.

Method 2: Top up through the VOXI App

1. Download the VOXI App. It is available for both iOS and Android.
2. Log in to your account.
3. Top up directly in the App. The minimum is £5.

Method 3: Third-party top-up, suitable for users in China

Search Taobao/JD for “UK Vodafone top-up” or “VOXI top-up”, find a reliable seller, provide your mobile number, and pay with Alipay/WeChat Pay.

Top-up notes:

• ⚠️ If the first top-up amount is >= £10, the system may automatically purchase a bundle.
• If a bundle is purchased automatically, you need to contact customer support to refund it to your balance and ask them to disable automatic purchases.
• I recommend topping up only £5 the first time to avoid this issue.

Step 9: Send an SMS test (number-retention action)

After the top-up succeeds, I recommend sending a test SMS right away. This also counts as a number-retention action.

How do you send an SMS?

Method 1: Send an SMS directly from your phone

1. Open the messaging app on your phone.
2. Select the VOXI SIM.
3. Send an SMS to your main mobile number, such as your number in China.
4. Write anything as the content, such as “test”.
5. After it sends successfully, about £0.06-0.08 will be deducted.

⚠️ What if sending fails?

If you find that SMS messages cannot be sent, it may be due to restrictions on the roaming network in China. In that case, you can use WiFi Calling to solve it!

Method 2: Send SMS with WiFi Calling (recommended!)

WiFi Calling lets you send SMS and make calls over a WiFi network. It does not rely on the mobile network, has a higher success rate, and is cheaper.

Enable WiFi Calling for iPhone users:

1. Go to Settings -> Cellular -> select the VOXI SIM
2. Find the WiFi Calling option and turn it on.
3. Connect to WiFi and use a VPN with a UK node.
4. Make sure the status bar shows “VOXI WiFi” or “Vodafone UK WiFi”. This means WiFi Calling is active.
5. Open the messaging app and send an SMS to your main mobile number.
6. Sent successfully! The cost is only about £0.06 per message.

Enable WiFi Calling for Android users:

1. Go to Settings -> Network & Internet -> SIMs -> select VOXI
2. Find the WiFi Calling or VoWiFi option and turn it on.
3. Connect to WiFi and use a VPN with a UK node.
4. Make sure the status bar shows the WiFi Calling icon
5. Open the Messages app and send a text message

Important note:

• You must use a VPN/proxy with a UK node. Nodes in other countries may not work.
• Make sure your WiFi connection is stable
• The first time you use WiFi Calling, it may take a few minutes to activate

Cost of sending texts:

• Sending a text to any number while roaming in China: £0.08/text
• Sending a text via WiFi Calling: £0.08/text (same cost, but a higher success rate)
• Making calls (roaming): £0.60/minute
• Receiving calls (roaming): £0.36/minute
• Roaming data: £0.12/MB (very expensive, so I recommend turning off data roaming)

Recommendation: If you find that sending texts directly fails, switch to WiFi Calling right away. It basically works every time!

Step 10: Cancel the plan and switch to Pay As You Go

This step is very important! If you do not cancel the plan, £10 will be deducted every month.

How do you cancel the plan?

1. Log in to the VOXI website: https://www.voxi.co.uk/
2. Go to Settings
3. Find Pause plan or leave VOXI
4. Then click “Pause my plan” on the page
5. Confirm the cancellation
6. Choose any reason
7. After cancellation succeeds, your account will automatically switch to Pay As You Go (PAYG) after the current plan period ends

What happens after you cancel?

• ✅ Your number will not be deactivated and can still be used
• ✅ You can send and receive texts normally (charged per use)
• ✅ Your balance will be kept and will not be cleared
• ✅ As long as there is a balance change every 180 days, the number can remain active indefinitely
• ❌ You will no longer have a data and calling plan (but we do not need one anyway)

Costs after switching to PAYG:

• Receiving texts: free
• Sending texts: £0.06-0.08/text
• Making calls: from £0.35/minute
• Data: very expensive, so I recommend turning off data roaming

7. Number-keeping strategy: as little as 1.5 RMB per year, or even less!

After switching to Pay As You Go, keeping the number becomes very easy.

VOXI’s number-keeping rule:

• Any balance change extends validity by 180 days
• Receiving texts is free and does not deduct any money, so it cannot keep the number active
• There must be active spending, such as sending a text, making a call, or topping up

Reminder before the number expires:

• VOXI will send you a text reminder 90 days before the number expires
• So you do not need to worry too much about forgetting. You will have plenty of time to act.

Number-keeping option 1: Send a text (the easiest method)

Steps:

1. Every 5-6 months, use this VOXI SIM to send a text to your main phone number
2. Write anything as the message, such as “Keep number active”
3. After the text is sent successfully, the validity period is automatically extended by 180 days

Cost calculation:

• Each text costs about £0.08
• Send 2 texts per year, for a cost of about £0.16
• Based on the exchange rate, that is roughly 1.5 RMB/year

This is the principle behind my claim that “£5 can keep the number active for 30 years”:

• Top up £5, and each text costs £0.08
• £5 ÷ £0.08 = 62.5 times
• Sending 2 texts per year means it can last 31 years!

Number-keeping option 2: Top up to keep the number active (set it up once and be done)

Steps:

1. Top up £5 to the account in one go
2. The top-up itself counts as a “balance change”
3. The validity period is automatically extended by 180 days
4. After that, send one text every 5-6 months to keep the number active

Cost calculation:

• Initial top-up: £5
• After that, send 2 texts per year, costing £0.16
• Total cost: £5 + £0.16 per year

Assessment:

• ✅ Top up once, then you only need to send texts afterward
• ✅ Plenty of balance, so no need to worry about insufficient funds
• ✅ Suitable for users who have foreign-currency payment methods

Number-keeping option 3: Send texts via WiFi Calling (fixes sending failures)

Important: The main purpose of WiFi Calling is not to save money, but to solve the problem of failing to send texts while in China!

If you find that sending texts directly keeps failing, you can use WiFi Calling:

Steps:

1. Enable WiFi Calling on your phone (called WiFi Calling on iPhone and VoWiFi on Android)
2. Use a VPN/proxy with a UK node
3. Make sure the status bar shows “VOXI WiFi” or “Vodafone UK WiFi”
4. Send a text to your main number
5. The cost is still £0.08/text

Cost calculation:

• Each text costs about £0.08 (the same as sending it directly)
• Send 2 texts per year, for a cost of about £0.16
• Based on the exchange rate, that is roughly 1.5 RMB/year

Assessment:

• ✅ Fixes sending failures and has a higher success rate
• ✅ A £5 top-up can last 30+ years
• ⚠️ Requires a VPN/proxy with a UK node
• ⚠️ Requires a phone that supports WiFi Calling
• ⚠️ First-time use requires activation (see the detailed steps below)

🔥 Detailed steps to activate WiFi Calling for the first time (very important)

Some users may run into this issue: they can receive texts but cannot send them. This is because WiFi Calling has not been activated.

You only need to do this once for the initial activation. You do not need to repeat it later.

Activation steps for iPhone users:

1. Go to Settings -> Cellular -> select the VOXI SIM
2. Make sure WiFi Calling is turned off
3. Turn on your VPN/proxy, connect to a UK node, and set it to global proxy mode
4. Pull down Control Center and turn off WiFi first
5. Turn on Airplane Mode
6. Then turn WiFi back on (keep Airplane Mode enabled at this point)
7. Go back to your phone settings and open the settings for the VOXI SIM
8. Turn on WiFi Calling and tap Enable
9. Wait 10-20 seconds
10. Pull down Control Center and check whether the “WiFi Call” indicator appears in the top-left corner
11. If it appears, activation was successful!
12. You can now turn off Airplane Mode and use it normally

Activation steps for Android users:

1. Go to Settings -> Network & Internet -> SIMs -> select VOXI
2. Make sure WiFi Calling is turned off
3. Turn on your VPN/proxy, connect to a UK node, and set it to global proxy mode
4. Turn off WiFi first
5. Turn on Airplane Mode
6. Then turn WiFi back on (keep Airplane Mode enabled at this point)

• If texts still will not send, use WiFi Calling again (just connect to a VPN/proxy with a UK node)

For some people, it still may not work even after doing this. That is fine; later, we only need to create a balance change to keep the number active.

8. Pitfall avoidance guide (must read!)

Pitfall 1: Turn off data roaming!

Roaming data on this SIM is extremely expensive. If it accidentally uses data, your balance can be wiped out instantly.

Solution:

• Go to phone settings -> Cellular -> select the VOXI SIM
• Turn off “Data Roaming”
• Keep only “Voice and SMS” enabled

Pitfall 2: The address must be real

If the address you enter is obviously fake, such as a post office address or business address, it may be rejected.

Solution:

• Use Google Maps to find a real residential address
• Make sure the address format is correct and the postcode actually exists

The eSIM QR code will be sent to your email. If you enter it incorrectly, you will not receive it.
